Obviously there appears to be a bit of flexibility allowed in FF1 training, witness JDub;s comment about CCFA and Mercer Countty, so just tack on at least an evening's module on Mayday and evac...to answer Web Boss, have the Chief's Association request that they be added.
As far as in-house goes, a review of Mayday procedures should be done annually during your OSHA required SCBA Refresher..it shouldn't be long, just to the point and practiced.

Also I know other depts. have training mock ups in the rear of one of their stations. Say for a denver drill or a john nance drill. Also possible a scba confidence course on the first floor and a roof simulator on the roof.....

At 431 we are working on a training list that you are required to take in order to move up threw the ranks of the department. This was taken from what 272 already has in place but just tweaked and changed to fit our needs. Hopefully we will be able to get the program up and running by the end of the year. This program is for new recruits only. It includes RIT Awareness and RIT OPS as part of the program.

As most of you should know, I am a member of the State RIT committee. We have been meeting regularly over the last two or three years. We have recently forwarded our recommendations to the State Training and Education committee, for standardized RIT training trough out the State. T&E should be voting on them this month. The following is an overview of those recommendations: RIT Awareness will remain a 4 hour lecture based module, and should become part of FFI. It will still be a stand alone program as well. RIT Operations will expand from 12 to 24 hours. The same topics and drills will be included in everyone's programs. RIT OPS will be either a part of FFII or be a prerequisite. FF II has a 16 hour RIT module. The purpose for this standardization is so that there is consistency through out the State. All of the agencies represented were doing just about the same things already. So there should not be any big surprises. We at the ESTC run the S&T program. The committee agreed that these types of programs would remain locally controlled and developed. Ours as alot of you know is primarily scenario based and utilizes a team approach. If you have already taken it, feel free to take it again, we change it up every time, it will always be challenging.
As far as the comments about removing things from FFI. I don't disagree, but the topics and times allotted for them are set forth by both the DFS and NFPA. In order to have our program meet the standards set forth we have to include certain topics. That doesn't mean more can't be added, But how long do you want the class be. FFI gives them the basic knowledge, they should be and I stress should be ready to work as part of a supervised crew.
I hope this clears things up alittle. If anyone want to know more feel free to contact me in the office. Or my cell, most of you should have the number or be able to find it.
