Another Close Call..regardless if the Tower had the green, I always say approach the intersection with extreme caution. Now the driver of the passenger vehicle was most likely on their cell phone, maybe not. Maybe the tower has the Red and the passenger car has a green. It's quite hard to tell by the quality of the video. Still...this could've been a real mess....if your responding to a working fire...it's still gonna be there when you get there. Arrive Alive, So Everybody Goes Home... www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwAP-vfQyRU This video is from Milwaukee and was filmed by a news crew that happened to be on that corner. The tower ladder had the red light

While this particular video may not apply, two of the things that gets my BP soaring are: 1) Eight guys standing around on a roof while two make a cut....WTF? 2) All of them standing around admiring the hole they made. WTF? Are you finished? Good...get OFF THE ROOF!

Unfortunately it seems that driving emergency vehicles to some people overlook the DOT regulations. Believe it or not some jurisdictions, emergency vehicles are not required to respect traffic lights, but must activate their own emergency lights when crossing an intersection against the light, in order to alert oncoming drivers to the preemption. Why take that risk! In Mo-town we are constantly reminded about driving with do regard. What good are you to the people you serving if you are smashed up some where. Take the time to stop…..arrive alive & everyone goes home.
Peace!

IMHO...we all get NTS...it happens...but we need to remember and think before we act.
Can you imagine the lawsuit for blowing a red light at emergency speed and t-boning a car, or one t-boning the truck? Field day for whoever you hit cause you just f#$% yourself in the A! Regardless if the car came out of nowhere. You had the red, they had the green. We are called to assist the public in an emergency but in order to do our job in the professional matter in which is needs to be done, we all need to remember that the fires still going to be there when we get there. The cars wont morph back to normal, disregarding the extrication.
Sometimes, others will be 1st due, who cares? Wouldn't you rather your agencies unit be on the scene, showing the public, "Hey, were still proud to be here alive and are ready to do our job" versus the NBC 10 helicopter flying over the scene of a a fire engine on it's side because it had to lock up the brakes to miss a car? I know I would.
We all want to be 1st due, but what's going to happen when 3 trucks meet at a red light (if there's a location to where this can happen) and only 1 has the green to go straight and 2 have the red? Im pretty sure one of those two trucks will try to "California Roll" that light...it happens. But we need to again, remember, the calls not going anywhere, and if it does it wasn't enough of an "emergency" to have 4 engines coming in Code 3 for. Wouldn't you rather go home for dinner rather than wake up in Cooper because your unit rolled blowing a red for a wires?
Arrive Alive so Everyone Goes Home!
Rant concluded....

I don't care how important company or department pride is supposed to be, taking unnecessary risks to be able to say you got there first is inexcusable.
I don't remember who coined the term NTS (Non-Thinking Syndrome) but here's my contribution:

Here's another 'What not to do" video. This drivers actions with this rig were way un-called for, it was way past wreckless to be 2nd due for a car fire which was controlled. Sorry....this driver should have been suspended upon returning to quarters. Whether you agree with me or not, thats my take. www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmC8OmN7p9Y

I show that clip as a part of my D/O Basic Module....a classic illustration of LHIC.
One of the problems I've encountered with teaching D/O class is that regardless of the material presented, delivered, accepted, and tested, it's basically a crap shoot how a person will act the first time they get behind the wheel of a BTR for a real response...in some ways, I wish there was a LHIC Psych Test I could administer to better judge what the person's reaction will be to all the confusion, chaos, and adrenaline surge. Remarkably, some can actually use all that to sharply focus their attention, while others lose all their common sense. I actually thought about hooking up a pulse meter/BP cuff then showing them one of these videos to see what the rate of rise would be....a bit off the wall, I grant you, but think about the poor grunts in the back of the truck!
