Your mission statement should be short enough to remember and cover the reason you exist. Anything else is just fluff and won't really mean anything. Make it something you can hang your hat on and everyone can do every duty to fulfill the mission statement on every run.

You want it to say that your department is there to protect the residents and visitors of your community. Not quite sure how to word it, as I have never written one before.

I know that we have an actual mission statement, and especially having rank now, shame on me for not knowing it verbatim. (I know what'll be doing later on)
A mission statement is one thing, but we have a by-line we use quite often that really sets the tone and motivates how things get done. "Raising the Standard in Community Service."

Chris
I never gave our mission statement much thought until after my dad died in the line of duty.
During some of the inspections to look into his death we were asked quite often for the mission statement of our company.
When the DCA was there they suggested that we make sure we stated that we were here to protect the lives on property to all the resident and visitors to our town. They also mentioned that we should list our limits as in rescues and building fires.
Shoot me an e-mail and i can forward you the info I have and the way the DCA wanted to see it written

how about providing an positive environment free of factors such as harrassment I agree with the WebBoss, the "dressmeups bouquets" have far to much to do now without giving them another reason to sit on their marshmallows and talk about how hot is was in there. Remember what Papacheese has been saying to you windtunnel........... Moorestown adopted their official Mission/Vision statement this past Saturday morning. When that is finalized, someone from 31 will post it for your review/use.

Doug: a mission statement tells the world WHAT we will do; an organizational statement tells HOW will we will do it, so your comment is more appropriate for the latter.
Kumbaya's, lawn ornaments, yard breathers, or not.....an organizational statement absolutely should contain a statement that discrimination and/or harrassment of any form will not be tolerated.

Add to Chiefs response a well drafted, documented policy on discrimination/harassment placed in the Rules and Regulations of the Department. Each member needs to be aware of the location and contents of the document.
