SEAL HARBOR - Norman Lee Hawes, 67, died Nov. 24, 2008, at the Maine Veterans' Home, Bangor. He was born Dec. 13, 1940, in Oconomowoc, Wis., son of William G. and Ruth V. (Wooten) Hawes. He was a senior professional researcher at Jackson Laboratory involved in studies of chromosomal mechanics and eye genetics. He was actively involved with Mount Desert Fire Department and was a founding member of Mount Desert Island Search and Rescue team. An avid outdoorsman, he carried the titles of "Mr. Endurance," "The Iron Man" and "The Wheel Deal," in sports such as canoeing/kayaking, mountain climbing, biking, running, skiing and scuba diving. Norman is survived by his beloved wife, Tina of Seal Harbor; his sons, David D. Hawes and his wife, Jill, of Mount Laurel, N.J., and Edward W. Hawes and special companion, Kathi Smith, of Plymouth, N.H.; his mother, Ruth V. Hawes of Waterville; his brother, George and wife, Betsy, of Blooming Grove, N.Y.; his sister, Ruth E. Beal of Mercer; his sister-in-law, Gwen Hawes and her special companion, Daryl Provost, of Winslow; and 10 nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his father; and by his brother, W. Allan Hawes. The family is planning a public memorial in celebration of Norm's life in early spring. Interment will be in the William Hawes family lot at Union Common Cemetery, Union.
