Take about ten minutes to read this recently released NIOSH report: www.cdc.gov/niosh/fire/reports/face200729.htmlWhile not implictedly stated, it must be assumed that the captain and firefighter were caught in a flashover; their thermal and inhalation injuries, along with the observed conditions at the time, would seem to point in that direction. If nothing else, remember that smoke is fuel, and as Chief Dodson likes to point out in illustration, that we're usually swimming through a pool of vaporized #2 fuel oil. That thick, boiling black smoke may be the only warning you get....
