I've got a question that I'm hoping someone can help with. My house is currently oil heat with an underground tank. Since the tank is mostly empty now is the best time to get it pulled (Plus NJ has rebates to cover some of the cost).
The question is what replace it with. The usual option is to go with an above-ground tank and be done with it. Since heating oil is currently $3.97/gal and projected to go higher I'm seriously considering getting a natural gas conversion. I have gas to the house as well so that shouldn't be a problem. My concern is the efficiency/complexity/cost of the conversion kits, and the overall advantages of oil vs natural gas heat.
Does anyone have any knowledge in that area? There's a lot online but usually its put out by the oil or gas company and is rather one-sided. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm sorry I don't have a real answer for you, but I would just ask a bunch of HVAC contractors...then take the average of those opinions. We have never had anything but Gas heat, so I don't have a good way to help either.

Well I am an HVAC contractor, conversion to gas is your best bet. Historically gas vs oil pricing has always flip-flopped, with oil sometimes being the more economical solution. However, in todays world with the ever rising price of crude oil, natural gas has become a slightly more effective heating source. Since you already have gas to the residence you are a step ahead, what kind of heater do you have? (ie furnace, boiler) Natural gas burner guns are available for the majority of oil fired furnaces and boilers, but I would strongly recommend a system upgrade at the same time. The money you save by installing a more efficient (up to 40% more efficient depending on your current system) natural gas heating system, combined with your savings on oil will in a short time pay for your upgrade.
I can also say as far as maintenance and break downs, an oil fired system is far more expensive. An average oil service (which must be done once a year) can run you at least $125. I have seen natural gas systems run for years without needing anything more than a filter change, though they should also be maintained.
Bottom line...in this economy natural gas will give you more bang for your buck. If you would like more info or an estimate feel free to PM me and I will give you my contact info.
