Around 2:30 PM EST, Ocean County 911 received a 911 call for a working brush fire in the Barnegat area of Ocean County on Route 72. With the past couple days being dry, humid and with a lot of wind, it was a mixture for a forest fire. The fire got a huge start on firefighters and advanced to the point they had to put the Ag-Cats and Bells in the air to attack it.
Tanker 291, Rescue Engine 292, and Tanker 185 were dispatched to the Coyle Airfield on Route 72 to assist Forestry units. Upon arrival of Deputy Chief 2901, Rescue Engine 2923 (Lebanon Lakes) was 1st due and was instructed to start filling planes as they came. Tanker 2916 (Chatsworth) arrived and topped off RE2923 and started to shuttle as Engine 2912 set a draft up down Route 72. Tanker 1856 (Magnolia Road) arrived and staged near RE2923 and provided a constant water supply. T2916 shuttled between the draft site and the air field filling T1856 which kept the water supply established for RE2923 to fill the fields underground water tank (8,000 Gallons). Deputy 2901 immediately requested a BLS to respond to the field for rehab as it looked to be a pro-longed incident. This went on for about 6 hours when the fire was reported to be controlled and 90%+ contained and Air Operations were suspended.
Units on scene at Coyle Airfield:
CHIEF 2900 CHIEF 2901 CHIEF 2920 EMS 2980 RESCENG 2923 ENG 2912 (Draft Site) TANK 2916 TANK 1856 AMB 2981 FP 1727 FP 1729

. Ocean County Brush Fire Deemed Arson
POSTED: 6:29 pm EDT April 21, 2008 UPDATED: 7:11 pm EDT April 21, 2008
A huge brush fire over the weekend was deemed a case of arson.
Police said the fire in the Pine Barrens in Barnegat Township in Ocean County was intentionally set.
No one was hurt and no homes were destroyed but 150 acres were scorched Saturday.
The fire burned near the site of a much larger forest fire last May that charred 17,000 acres. That fire was touched off accidentally when a National Guard jet dropped a flare into the Pinelands during a training run on a hot, dry day.
Anyone with any information is urged to call Barnegat Township police.
