One of the repetitive themes mentioned during many of the seminars and classes offered at FDIC this year is a growing - and increasingly documented - high incidence of cancer in firefighters. Look for this to become more and more a hot topic as states begin to debate "presumptive cancer" legislation for active firefighters. New Jersey was considering a proposed bill, but apparently it is held up in committee.
Samplings of smoke from a "typical" house fire now feature much more exotic toxins than ever before, due mostly to all the plastic, fiberglass, resins, and PVC present in our homes. Like anything else, the problem is the lack of immediate negative reinforcement; the breath you take today could in fact be the reason for something nasty happening years from now.
Why take the chance? Air is cheap.....
