I agree about funding...there should be a grant system available for departments that can't afford a laptop...or at least (maybe) a donation process from industry.
As far as the aircard is concerned, I understand that the cost is around $60 per month...and that's one area that the County's purchasing clout could have a significant impact....they should arrange an "emergency services" group rate at a reduced cost.
As far as numbers are conerend, my perspnal opinion is that the command vehicles and first out apparatus should be equipped...and nothing more after that...or make the laptop transferable between units.

I agree "Pop", but I'm sure my department isn't unique in that we don't have a true "First Out" rig. Our Engine is just as important for first out types of calls as the Squad is. Now I would love to have an MCT in the Squad for many reasons, but then again the Engine is what goes to the RSTF's, Pipelines, Covers, and away games where the specialties of the Squad aren't required.
I dunno... I guess I figure the MCT's cost less installed then 1 portable radio in this county, so what's it to the county to put up for 200 or so MCT's? I'm sure even if they provided the equipment, the end users could find away to pay for the air time fees.
Is this an issue we might be able to build support for and push? How would we go about doing so??

We have used the FH side for EMS as well for some time. It is very comprehensive and easy to use. This year after some serious thought we decided to go to EMS Charts for our charting software because at the time FH EMS Mobile just isn't where it needs to be.
In my opinion EMS Charts is great if you don't try to make it more complicated that it needs to be. We don't use Tough Books or Laptops. We take PT info on a stat pad and at the hospital have the pt sign and the nurse sign the back of the stat pad. When we get back we place the info into EMS Charts and scan in the two signatures and attach them to the chart. We have found it easier to QA/QI reports, better tracking of calls, finding trends in how we are providing service, and the pt care reports are getting to the billing company a lot quicker.
I have heard that the new version of FH EMS Mobile is going to be 100% better than the current version and we have discussed the possibility of returning to FH EMS if it is a better system. We are always looking to find the best way to take care of business.
If you or anyone else wants to stop by and see either FH EMS or EMS Charts. Just let me know. Pop Cheese can tell you I'm a pretty good sales man...

We currently use EMSCharts as well and have no plans of getting away from it, FhEMS would be an additional tool in the toolbox basically....... especially if we ever get to the capabilities of the software like Pennsauken uses....

We have always used FH software. Last year we purchased the latest Firehouse 7.0 Enterprise version for 9K only to find out later the county was working on this project. I can say we are quite happy with the system. The software is located on our municipal server, which all Chiefs, Officers and Stations have remote access to from station, home or wireless. Recently we had a system crash when they attempted to install the latest FH update, although I am told that should be resolved this week and we should be on the county system within days.

171 has been up on the new Firehouse Software remotely since 12/28/07. We have had no problems at all. We are existing FH users. I backed up all of the info and burned it to a CD, dropped it off with the IT group and we were up and running by the end of the day. I have logged in using air cards, wireless networks at home and in the station, wired networks, etc. It all works great. This is even better for us since we have only had the free module from the state. Having all of the modules now will really progress our organization.
