Seems to be a universally asked question regardless of what firehouse you're in....I wanted to start a thread where we can contribute ideas and suggestions for training sessions specifically geared towards the standard drill time period of one to two hours. All of us have our favorites - as well as the ones that were spectacular flops.
As an instructor, one of my pet peeves is trying to deliver too much training in too short a time period....you end up with most people scratching their heads, uncertain or unsure of what they've been taught or if it has any use. I advocate shorter, more focused drills that concentrate on one or two skills that allow each member to actually do it, thereby increasing the retention rate.
I'll start digging through my stuff and posting brief overviews...it would be great if everyone threw something into the pile, thereby increasing the "inventory" of possible drills we can draw on. I'm ALWAYS looking for new ideas and approaches.....
For the sake of simplicity, I tend to catagorize drills into three different types:
Crew Drills: designed for three to six firefighters
Company Drills: ten to twenty firefighters with one or two pieces of apparatus
Department Drills: multi-station, multi-apparatus, twenty-plus firefighters...can be either practical or classroom, usually focused on coordinated tactics (engine, truck, rescue)
