(Ended up minor) 2723 arrived and began extrication of an apox 50 yo male driver from a Ford Pick-up. Entire dashboard was sitting on his lap. 2782 assumed care of patient and 2781 checked for injuries in the other car. Medic 31 arrives and after an assessment requests chopper to fly. Wow great job!!!! even with all that rust on the bottom rail. Okay, Shawn's comment about the rust brings out the "Idiot of The Week Question" courtesy of me... Does rust on a vehicle affect the operation of rescue tools? I honestly don't know and that is why I ask. PS- Hey Craig is Lee a member of this board yet? If he isn't, get him to join...

First asking questions are how we learn and one is never a stupid question or one is never a idiot for asking!!!
So to answer your question. It does not effect the operation of the tool. But it effects the performance of that tool. Each tool relies on a contact point that needs to be strong enough to be a stable platform to support the tool and its operation. Having Rust or a heavily damaged section that you are using as a contact point tend to move, break or disintegrate before you start to move the portion you are planning to move.
