I'll start this one off...Sta. 468, EMS 411 and M34 dispatched for a Diabetic Emergency. 4112 was first to arrive and found an approximately 450 lb.male patient that had high blood sugar, high fever, staph infection, and couldn't walk due to swelling in legs. Had not moved or eaten in 4 days. M34 arrived and evaluated, then released care to EMT's. 4682 and 4103 arrived and assisted in pt. care. Due to size of patient and mobility problems I had 4101 add R6819 for possible need of equipment and extra manpower. Upon 6819's arrival all manpower except for me sized up the best way to move patient outside and into 4682. They decided to use the reeves as a sled down off of the bed and then down the tight hallway and slide it directly onto the stretcher from the doorway. Took approximately 8 people to move from patients room out to the stretcher, and once at the hospital took 6 people to move from stretcher to hospital bed. Took approximately a total of 2-2.5 hours(not exactly sure)
Lots of curveballs throughout, but great job done by all. Special thanks to R6819 for all their help
Units on location- EMS Engine 4112 BLS 4682 Medic 34(Triaged to BLS) R 6819(Added for possible need of technicial advice/equipment and for manpower)

I was listening when you were on that job. I was wondering what the heck was taking you guys so long and now I know why. Sounds like it was a real back breaker to say the least.

yea, i was the officer on the engine and simply didnt have time to give progress reports, and everyone else on scene was sizing up the best way to get him out. finally my captain realized we had been there forever and updated central. they probably forgot about us.

Two Comments-
1. Did the medic stay and help? Bravo if they did!!!!
2. If you were using a standard reeves be very carefully if you do it again They are only rated to 350 Lbs. Suggest to the higher ups to get a obese reeves they are rated to 750 lbs
Been on a few of these calls. removed windows on a couple.

1-medics came, saw, and said good luck with it 2-we had the reeves for the "oversized" people from fort dix's rescue, and that was even making some wierd sounds. ive been asking for the white hats to get one and we finally are going to supposedly

I always get a kick out of when your taking a large person to a hospital and you call central to have them call the receiving facility and tell them we are going to need a bariatric stretcher....i always get..."A What?!?!?!"
