I do it because I have to. I was about to let it expire when I got on the job. Now they pay a little extra each year to be one, and also to get my CEUs. Otherwise I have no problem mailing my card back to the state.

I wish I could say otherwise, but like most ff/emt's I too got it to get on the job. It worked and now I guess I don't mind it as much. I give credit to the people that do it voluntarily. There is a lot required to keep it valid and you can't get good at it without practicing it on a consistant basis.

I became interested after I was on the "customer" side at my car accident (towns involved shall remain nameless) and realized I received better care from the FFs on-scene then the refusal-pushers (I mean EMTs). I figured I couldn't moan and complain unless I knew what they were doing. Now that I know.... I enjoy it most of the time.

------ Of course, it doesn't hurt the employment prospects either to be an EMT, active, and with supplemental skills like PHTLS/BTLS or something along those lines.

I started as a 5-pointer way back when then became 8 points then EMT. It is something that I just started with a group of people (teenager) and got bit by the bug. Became a EMT short time after. Jioned the FD to help them out. Got bit by that bug. But have been a career EMT since 1987. So, I quess I am a little different. would I have been a paid fireman yes but in the 80 and 90 not many ops available like today.

Forgot to post this ..... but I became an EMT to make myself a more useful Firefighter and to provide better service to my community when I was allowed to "Do It"... Just so happens that by doing so it led to employment opportunities.

I'm not an EMT yet, but I do run with a squad. I'll be doing it just to help out. My original purpose was so i could Join a paid fire department though.

At the time I was Chief at 461 / 468. Took the opportunity while I had the time to get my EMT. Had tried previously but couldn't fit it in to my work schedule. So with no work for a while had plenty of time to get my EMT. Now it seems like a majority of my career focuses around EMS. Didn't like it a first, but do actually enjoy it now. For anyone expecting to stay in our service, especially as a career, you need it. Would however much rather be on the BRT.

I became an emt when i was suspended from the mount holly fire dept. i didn't want to do it but i had a lil bit of free time and i did want a fire job so i did it. i got hired in mount holly ems 3 weeks after i passed. Then i ended up working for a medical transport company wich i really hate. Then i was informed about the gloucester county ems job. So i applied and went through the testing and interviews and i though i wasn't gonna get that job by a long shot...but i got hired and beat out 700 other applicants for 1 of 140 spots...i still want to be a paid firefighter ...but i'll take paid emt (for as much as i'm making)..as a consolation prize..hell i'm thinking bout goin 2 paramedic school. not bad for someone who hated ems lol.
