These came to me during my morning constitutional and are primarily offered to the next generation...please feel free to add, subtract, emphasize, or argue.....
Ten Commandments for the First Ten Minutes1. Never assume – we all know what it spells
2. Be skeptical – nothing is ever 100% what we think it is. Half of what you hear and see isn't what it appears to be.
3. Be curious – remove your head from your ass and look around, listen closely, watch the smoke. THINK
4. If you have a choice, take the bigger one – this applies to hand tools, hose lines, and the guy next to you.
5. Put your mask on. Air is cheap, medical care expensive.
6. Take a deep breath. Eventually, they ALL go out...
7. Pace yourself. Stamina is more important than brute strength
8. Speak slowly and clearly. Yelling doesn't help.
9. Be ready. Fires are unpredictable - duh!
10. Be smart: don't ruin the rest of your life for an empty house, animal, or obvious recovery. There will be other fires on other days that will require your experience, knowledge, and skills. Live to fight another day.
