Got this from a friend..who blurred the FD name to protect the innocent. This isn't to bash them, or anyone who's had this happen. This just goes to show that even things we do on a daily basis on calls, we can sometimes forget back at the firehouse...

found out it was sent back to the Sutphen plant in Columbus.
They estimated $100,000 in damages as the towing company twisted the frame to get it back on all 10 wheels...YIKES.

You mean that's not on purpose? I thought I was looking at an episode of Pimp My Tower.

A friend of mine is a fireman at one of the neighboring companies to Macedonia, Ohio. He explains the incident as operator error entirely. They raised the aerial as a training/building maintance excersise to clear a roof top vent as well as show a newer member the abilities to over-ride the safety interlocks of the unit for emergency circumstances. As we all know, the interlocks are in place for a reason.
The Tower is a 1991 Sutphen 95' model, very similar to Delran's 2315. The unit suffered just over $100k in damage, mostly being a twisted frame and broken suspension components due to the extreme lateral forces they took on. Surprisingly, once the rig was uprighted (by a tow company that caused even further damage to the frame and body), the aerial was found to only have suffered cosmetic damages and was lowered back on the truck with "normal" operations.
The Sutphen Corperation, which has been in continuous operations for over 100 years, is the only manufacturer in the US to be able to claim ZERO aerial failures, except for human error incidents. This has always been found as a sore subject with any of the other manufacturers, and they are already obscuring the details of this isolated incident.
Be Safe!
