Burlington County Emergency Services Training Center Training Announcement Calling the Mayday: Hands on Training
U.S. Fire Administration, National Fire Academy Why is getting a firefighter to call a mayday such a problem? No national standards exist in relation to calling a mayday. We have not taught or practiced calling a mayday. There are no specific parameters, or rules for when a firefighter must call a mayday. This eight hour NFA program will address these questions. It will provide a system that outlines when a firefighter must call a mayday. The firefighter will identify conditions such as: being trapped or lost in a room, having something collapse on them, being caught /snagged on something, or falling through a floor or roof. These conditions will be simulated using various props with the firefighter in full PPE, SCBA, and portable radio in reduced visibility conditions. The firefighter must demonstrate the ability to call a mayday under these emergency situations. The firefighter will send the mayday utilizing NJ and Burlington County protocols; it will be received over the radio and acknowledged by the student. Students must perform these skills at the master level, meaning 100% correct. A score of 100% is required on the written test prior to evaluations. Prerequisite: NJ DFS Firefighter I Certification Location: Burlington County Emergency Services Training Center Registration & Cost: Advance registration is required. Full PPE, SCBA, and a portable radio are required. Program Cost $30.00 Date & Time: Sunday, May 4, 2008 08:00 – 16:00 Contact Information: Senior Instructor Steve Taylor staylor@co.burlington.nj.us THIS PROGRAM IS NOT A TRAIN-THE-TRAINER.

You are correct Scott. Class was cancelled.
There were only two students registered. I'm not sure the reason why,but no one signed up.
Look for it to be in the fall catalog.

It figures... not to discredit any other classes offered, but there's always standing room only at the glory-boy classes, but a class that could actually to help save a fireman's life someday gets poor turnout and eventually cancelled.
Wow... we really have our priorities in order.
Kudo's to those who set the class up though - very good intentions.

While I wholeheartedly agree with everyone's comments, I can't help but wonder if the reason for such low interest is that (hopefully) "Calling the Mayday" is being covered extensively at their respective department or company levels. I can't speak for anyone else, but it's usually integrated into every SCBA drill we put on....as I'm sure it is with other organizations. Just my .02.....
