Hey, stuff happens...and usually everyone gets a turn in the barrel at some point. I teach my fledgling D/O's to sign on location about a block before arriving just in case the IC is a bit pre-occupied and needs a second or two to decide position and/or assignment. That's the "Hi..I'm here" I was referring to in my earlier posting. Years ago I was soundly upbraided for driving my first-due engine right up to the scene when it was clearly obvious to the IC (but not to me of course) that we really needed to go around the block and come in from the opposite direction. Mind you, mental telepathy isn't exactly my strong suit.

Where I work the 1st and 2nd due engines stretch and operate the first line. The 3rd and 4th engines stretch and operate the second line which either backs up the first line or goes to the floor above. The first due truck goes to the fire floor and the second due truck goes to the floor above. EVERYONE knows this and makes for very little confusion and almost no radio traffic. This is also helpful if you become lost or trapped since the IC and FAST truck can approximate your location based on what due you were.
