I like collecting these little nuggets and whenever needed, referring back to them for a little motivation. Trite as they can be, some of the better ones have a way of summing up things in a better, more proper perspective....here are a few:
"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader" John Quincy Adams
"True success is overcoming the fear of being unsuccessful" Paul Sweeney
"A successful man is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at him" David Brinkley
"Stopping at third base adds no more to the score than striking out" E. Joseph Cossman
"Good instincts usually tell you what to do long before your head has figured it out" Michael Burke
"I'd rather be a failure at something I enjoy than a success at something I hate" George Burns
"Those who trust us educate us" T.S. Elliot
Many of this forum's members are in positions of authority and/or responsibilty, which in my experience, can often prove to be a taxing and trying experience from time to time. I offer the above as a reminder that anything worth doing is worth doing well...and for our future leaders as valuable wisdom condensed into a sentence or two...

I also keep a running list of some good quotes, as well as some good knee slappers.
When it comes to everyday choices around the firehouse, especially those concerning our level of professionalism, I prefer to live by Steve Martin's comments as Chief in the movie Roxanne. See my Signature!

Some of my favorites from the Great Vince Lombardi!!!!!!!!
"Success is like anything worthwhile. It has a price. You have to pay the price to win and you have to pay the price to get to the point where success is possible. Most important, you must pay the price to stay there."
"Confidence is contagious and so is lack of confidence, and a customer will recognize both."
"If you believe in yourself and have the courage, the determination, the dedication, the competitive drive and if you are willing to sacrifice the little things in life and pay the price for the things that are worthwhile, it can be done."
"Unless a man believes in himself and makes a total commitment to his career and puts everything he has into it-his mind, his body and his heart-what is life worth to him? If I were a salesman, I would make this commitment to my company, to the product and most of all, to myself."
"A leader must identify himself with the group, must back up the group, even at the risk of displeasing superiors. He must believe that the group wants from him a sense of approval. If this feeling prevails, production, discipline, morale will be high, and in return, you can demand the cooperation to promote the goals of the company."
"Leadership rests not only upon ability, not only upon capacity; having the capacity to lead is not enough. The leader must be willing to use it. His leadership is then based on truth and character. There must be truth in the purpose and will power in the character."

My favorite from vince lombardi..."WHAT THE HELLS GOING ON OUT THERE? ??" but seriously from him, "Individual commitment to a group effort - that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work." "Success demands singleness of purpose." "The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have." and then some others from some other people... "Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other." John F. Kennedy "Leadership is a matter of having people look at you and gain confidence, seeing how you react. If you're in control, they're in control." Tom Landry "The supreme quality for leadership is unquestionably integrity. Without it, no real success is possible, no matter whether it is on a section gang, a football field, in an army, or in an office." Dwight D. Eisenhower "When you start out in a team, you have to get the teamwork going and then you get something back." Michael Schumacher and then my absolute favorite that everyone can identify with... "The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits." Albert Einstein

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. Martin Luther King, Jr
“Firemen are going to get killed. When they join the department they face that fact. When a man becomes a fireman his greatest act of bravery has been accomplished. What he does after that is all in the line of work. They were not thinking of getting killed when they went where death lurked. They went there to put the fire out, and got killed. Firefighters do not regard themselves as heroes because they do what the business requires.” Chief Edward F. Croker
Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity George S. Patton

General Patton is a personal favorite of mine. Lots of good quotes that can relate to what we do.
“Lead me, follow me, or get out of my way. ”
“Good tactics can save even the worst strategy. Bad tactics will destroy even the best strategy.”
“Do everything you ask of those you command.”
“A pint of sweat will save a gallon of blood.”
“The soldier is the army.”

Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great." -- Mark Twain
There are no extraordinary men just extraordinary circumstances ordinary men are forced to deal with. Admiral Wm. F. Halsey USN
“ The experienced mountain climber is not afraid of the mountain – rather he is inspired by it. That’s how you feel about your impossible goal today. If you can let go of the need to be nervous, you’ll be sensational “ Unknown Author, Found It A fortune Cookie

Don't know about inspirational, but entertaining nontheless.........
Just because you're certified doesn't mean you're qualified.
The garbage man doesn't get excited when he turns the corner and sees trash, because he's expecting it. Likewise, you should be expecting fire on every run.
A young boy walked up to an old salt of a firefighter. The young boy said to the firefighter, "When I grow up, I want to be a firefighter like you." The old firefighter said, "Sorry Kid. You can't do both."
"Hey Lieutenant, it's hot in here...." "Yea, that's why they called us, Ken."
You have two hands, carry two tools!
I'm not here to be in a social club; I'm here to do a job. If I make a few friends along the way, Great! If not, oh well.

“I think it better to do right, even if we suffer in so doing, than to incur the reproach of our consciences and posterity.”-Robert E. Lee
“Leadership is a potent combination of strategy and character. But if you must be without one, be without the strategy.”- Norman Schwarzkopf
“He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else”- Benjamin Franklin
