To sum it up in few words. Learn everything you can now, because you'll need it later and you'll be able to say hey I know what this is or whats happening.
To add to Chief Pratt's:
The Best Firemen know how, why, when, and most importantly what to do about it!

Just remember you can never know everything about fire fighting. It is a constantly changing field, and everyday you learn something new. Be positive, be alert, and be SAFE and TRAIN!!!!

One thing that different today than in the past - and which will remain a driving factor in your future firefighting career - is knowledge as well as skill.
Used to be the work was entirely physical in nature....pull this, ladder that, crawl here....the kinds of activities we all enjoy the challenge of doing.
More so now than ever before though, we need to be able to KNOW as well as DO...there has been a quantum leap in "required" knowledge than what was really taught or used ten years ago...as Chief Pratt alluded, a desire to know WHY speaks volumes of a peron's professionalism and desire to improve.
